Gear Review: Calpine Chair (Alite Designs)

I have been looking for a new camping chair for some time. I’m done sitting on the ground with a pad. You work your body so hard during a canoe trip, that at the end of the day it’s nice to sit on something comfortable to help rest your muscles and bones.

I have seen a lot outdoor enthusiasts using other Alite Designs chairs like the Helinox, Mayfly or Mantis, and tried these out for myself but they were just too low to the ground. Not much higher than the pad I had been sitting on. Plus, you lean so far back in them.

At the MEC store in Quebec City, I splurged for the Calpine Chair. It’s the tallest edition to the Alite Designs chairs and stands 15″ tall. It’s very sturdy and very comfortable! I think my camping friends are jealous when the see me sit in this thing.

  • 15″ tall and easy to get in and out of
  • Sturdy, heavy duty poles
  • Upright sitting
  • Weighs 3.3lbs
  • Comes with a lifetime guarantee

It's a little big, but fits in our pack nicely
It’s a little big, but fits in our pack nicely
  • It packs up 27.0″ x 6.0″ x 4.0″ which isn’t too bad, but it’s bigger than the other Alite chairs mentioned above
  • Kind of annoying to pack up with the poles, but once you have done it a couple of times it isn’t too bad

I would highly recommend this chair if you would like to sit a little higher off the ground and in an upright position. It’s been a great chair so far. It’s like luxury in the backcountry that only weighs just over 3lbs.
